Structure, Conduct and Performance of Onion Market in Southern Ghana

<p>The local onion market in Ghana is dominated by ‘on the spot’ relationships with little or no coordination of chains to improve quality and performance. This study examines structure, conduct their influence on performance southern part Ghana, using data from 180 actors, comprising 80 farmers, 40 wholesalers 60 retailers. Descriptive statistics, Gini coefficient, Lorenz curve, Herfindahl-Hirschman index Garett ranking were methods analysis used. The results showed that traders operating an oligopolistic coefficients 0.62 0.56 for retailers, respectively. findings also revealed farmers (69%) more open contracts than (20%) retailers (11%). Moreover, production proved be costly as they had a negative return 1.55% investment while made positive returns 29.85% 31.1%, Finally, high cost, marketing cost unavailability storage structures ranked most pressing constraints It recommended government, donor support agencies agriculture NGOs come aid providing them fixed assets at subsidized price. will relieve heavy losses which threaten future food security country.</p>
